Why did my catfish die?

I woke up this morning and looked in the tank and I found my baby catfish dead between the rock and shell we have in the middle of the tank. I pulled him out with thw net and he was pretty stuck betwwen the rock and shell (had to move them to get him out). I don't think he died from the water quality. Could it be possible he died from swimming so fast he ran right in between the rock and shell and died? Because I know how active pictus cats are at night and swim eratically so I thought maybe thats how he died. Any possibilties or personal experinces like this?
